How to Set Up MetaMask Wallet
MetaMask is the most popular Web3 wallet. It lets you store crypto, interact with DeFi apps, and collect NFTs. Here's how to set it up safely.
Only install MetaMask from metamask.io or official app stores. Fake MetaMask apps steal your crypto!
Install MetaMask
MetaMask is available as a browser extension and mobile app.
For Browser (Recommended for beginners):
- Go to metamask.io (type it directly, don't click links)
- Click "Download"
- Select your browser (Chrome, Firefox, Brave, Edge)
- Click "Add to [Browser]"
- Confirm the installation when prompted
For Mobile:
- Open App Store (iOS) or Play Store (Android)
- Search "MetaMask"
- Verify it's by "MetaMask" (check reviews and downloads)
- Install the app
The only official website is metamask.io. Any other URL (metamask.com, meta-mask.io, etc.) is a scam that will steal your funds.
Create Your Wallet
- Click the MetaMask icon in your browser toolbar
- Click "Get Started"
- Select "Create a Wallet"
- Agree to the terms of use
- Create a strong password (at least 12 characters)
- Click "Create"
This password only unlocks MetaMask on this device. Use something unique. A password manager can generate and store strong passwords.
Secure Your Seed Phrase
This is the most critical step. Your seed phrase is 12 words that can recover your entire wallet.
- Anyone with these words can steal all your funds
- NEVER share it with anyone, ever
- NEVER type it on any website
- NEVER store it digitally (no photos, no cloud, no notes app)
- MetaMask support will NEVER ask for it
How to Store Your Seed Phrase:
- Click "Reveal Secret Words"
- Write it down on paper (or metal for fire protection)
- Write the words in order (1-12)
- Double-check each word carefully
- Store in a safe, secure location
- Consider making 2 copies in different locations
Complete the verification quiz - MetaMask will ask you to confirm some words in order.
For significant holdings, consider a metal seed phrase backup (like Cryptosteel or Billfodl). Paper can burn or get water damaged.
Add Additional Networks
MetaMask defaults to Ethereum mainnet, but you can add other networks for lower fees.
To Add a Network:
- Click the network dropdown (top, says "Ethereum Mainnet")
- Click "Add Network"
- Search for the network or add manually
Popular Networks to Add:
| Network | Use For | Typical Fees |
|---|---|---|
| Polygon | Cheap DeFi, NFTs | $0.01-0.10 |
| Arbitrum | Ethereum L2 DeFi | $0.10-1.00 |
| Optimism | Ethereum L2 DeFi | $0.10-1.00 |
| BNB Chain | Binance ecosystem | $0.05-0.30 |
| Avalanche | Fast transactions | $0.05-0.50 |
Visit chainlist.org to easily add networks to MetaMask with one click. It's the safest way to add networks with correct settings.
Security Settings
Enable these settings to protect your wallet:
Go to Settings → Security & Privacy:
- Auto-lock timer - Set to 5 minutes or less
- Show test networks - Turn off (reduces confusion)
- Use phishing detection - Keep enabled
Additional Security Tips:
- Never approve unlimited token spending
- Review every transaction before confirming
- Create a "burner" wallet for new dApps
- Regularly revoke unused token approvals (revoke.cash)
- Consider a hardware wallet for large amounts
Click your account name to copy your address. This is like your bank account number - safe to share for receiving funds. It looks like: 0x1234...abcd
Common MetaMask Setup Mistakes
After helping thousands of users since MetaMask launched in 2016, we've seen these mistakes repeatedly. Avoid them to protect your funds.
Mistake 1: Skipping Seed Phrase Backup
Many users click through setup without properly writing down their seed phrase. In November 2022, during the FTX collapse, thousands rushed to self-custody and lost access because they skipped this step. Your 12 words are irreplaceable.
Mistake 2: Storing Seed Phrase Digitally
A study from Chainalysis in 2026 found that 41% of wallet thefts occurred when hackers accessed cloud-stored seed phrases. Screenshots sync to iCloud and Google Photos automatically. Write it on paper only.
Mistake 3: Downloading Fake Extensions
In March 2024, fake MetaMask extensions stole over $2.3 million before being removed. The Chrome Web Store had 7 fake versions at one point. Always verify the publisher is "https://metamask.io" with over 10 million users.
Mistake 4: Approving Unlimited Token Spending
When connecting to DeFi apps, MetaMask often requests "unlimited" token approval. This convenience creates risk. The Revoke.cash team estimates $370 million was stolen in 2026 through exploited unlimited approvals.
Mistake 5: Using the Same Wallet for Everything
Security experts recommend separate wallets for different purposes. Keep a "hot wallet" with $100-500 for daily DeFi use, and move larger holdings to hardware wallets. Think of it like carrying cash versus keeping savings in a vault.
Mistake 6: Ignoring Transaction Details
Always read what you're signing. In August 2024, the Pink Drainer phishing attack stole $4.4 million because users signed malicious transactions without checking. Take 10 seconds to verify each transaction.
Advanced Security Settings
Once you have the basics down, enable these advanced features for maximum protection.
Hardware Wallet Integration
MetaMask works with Ledger and Trezor hardware wallets. Your keys stay on the hardware device while MetaMask provides the interface. This combination offers hardware-level security with software convenience. Connect via Settings → Advanced → Connect Hardware Wallet.
Custom Networks Setup
Adding networks manually gives you more control. Here are exact settings for popular chains as of January 2026:
| Network | Chain ID | RPC URL | Gas Token |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arbitrum One | 42161 | https://arb1.arbitrum.io/rpc | ETH |
| Polygon | 137 | https://polygon-rpc.com | MATIC |
| Optimism | 10 | https://mainnet.optimism.io | ETH |
| Base | 8453 | https://mainnet.base.org | ETH |
Privacy Mode and Account Management
MetaMask lets you create multiple accounts under one seed phrase. Use different accounts for different activities. Account 1 for DeFi, Account 2 for NFTs, Account 3 for airdrops. Each has a unique address but shares the same recovery phrase.
Phishing Detection Settings
Enable all protection features in Settings → Security & Privacy:
- Turn on "Use Phishing Detection" - blocks known scam sites
- Enable "MetaMask Security Alerts" - warns about suspicious transactions
- Turn off "Show test networks" unless needed - reduces confusion
MetaMask Troubleshooting
Transaction Stuck or Pending
During high network congestion, transactions can get stuck for hours. Fix it by:
- Click the pending transaction
- Select "Speed Up" to add more gas
- Or select "Cancel" to replace with zero-value transaction
- Confirm with higher gas fee
In May 2024, when Ethereum gas hit 300 gwei during a major NFT mint, over 40,000 transactions were stuck for 6+ hours. Knowing this fix saved users thousands in failed transactions.
Wrong Network Error
Trying to send ETH on Polygon network fails because you need MATIC for gas. Always check you're on the correct network before transactions. The network name shows at the top of MetaMask - verify it matches where your tokens actually are.
Token Not Showing
MetaMask doesn't auto-display all tokens. Import manually:
- Scroll to bottom of Assets tab
- Click "Import tokens"
- Paste token contract address
- Token details auto-fill
- Click "Add Custom Token"
Get contract addresses from CoinGecko or CoinMarketCap only - never from random Twitter posts.
Cannot Connect to dApp
If MetaMask won't connect to a website:
- Check the site is on the correct network
- Clear MetaMask cache in Settings → Advanced → Reset Account
- Disconnect and reconnect at the site
- Try a different browser
MetaMask FAQs
Is MetaMask safe to use?
MetaMask itself is secure - it's open-source and audited. Over 30 million people use it monthly. However, you're responsible for protecting your seed phrase and avoiding phishing. The wallet is safe; user error causes most losses.
How much does MetaMask cost?
MetaMask is completely free. No subscription, no hidden fees. You only pay network gas fees for transactions, which go to blockchain validators, not MetaMask. The average Ethereum transaction costs $2-15 depending on congestion. Layer 2 networks cost $0.10-1.00.
Can I use MetaMask on multiple devices?
Yes. Install MetaMask on each device and import using your 12-word seed phrase. Your wallet will appear identically on all devices. However, this increases risk - if any device is compromised, your funds are at risk. Consider using different wallets for different security levels.
What happens if I lose my phone/computer?
Your crypto is safe as long as you have your seed phrase written down. Install MetaMask on a new device, select "Import existing wallet," enter your 12 words, and everything returns. This is why writing down your seed phrase is absolutely critical.
Can MetaMask be hacked?
MetaMask the software is secure, but users can be tricked. In 2026, phishing attacks stole $487 million from Web3 users - representing 73% of all crypto theft that year. The attacks targeted users, not wallets. Always verify you're on real websites and never share your seed phrase.
Does MetaMask work with hardware wallets?
Yes. MetaMask connects to Ledger and Trezor devices. Your private keys stay on the hardware wallet (safe), while MetaMask provides the user interface. Best of both worlds - hardware security with MetaMask convenience.
What networks does MetaMask support?
MetaMask supports all EVM-compatible chains. Out of the box: Ethereum, Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon, Avalanche, BNB Chain, Fantom, Base, and 50+ others. You can add any EVM chain manually using custom RPC settings.
Can I recover MetaMask without seed phrase?
No. If you lose your seed phrase and lose access to the wallet, your funds are gone forever. There's no password reset, no customer service recovery, no backdoor. This is decentralization - you have full control and full responsibility. Back up that seed phrase.
