Spot Trading Basics
Spot trading is the simplest form of crypto trading - you buy crypto at current prices and own it immediately. No use, no complexity, no extra risk.
Understanding Trading Pairs
In crypto, you always trade one asset for another. This is shown as a "trading pair."
How to Read Trading Pairs:
- BTC/USDT = Buy Bitcoin with USDT (or sell BTC for USDT)
- ETH/BTC = Buy Ethereum with Bitcoin (or sell ETH for BTC)
- SOL/USDC = Buy Solana with USDC (or sell SOL for USDC)
BASE/QUOTE
- Base = what you're buying/selling
- Quote = what you're paying with
- Price shown = how much quote for 1 base
BTC/USDT at $50,000 = 1 BTC costs 50,000 USDT
Common Quote Currencies:
| Currency | Type | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| USDT | Stablecoin | Most trading pairs, stable pricing |
| USDC | Stablecoin | More regulated, US focused |
| BTC | Crypto | Trading altcoins against Bitcoin |
| ETH | Crypto | DeFi tokens, NFT trading |
Order Types Explained
Market Order
Buy/sell immediately at the best available price.
- Pros: Fast, guaranteed to execute
- Cons: May get worse price if market is moving fast
- Best for: Small trades, urgent situations
Limit Order
Set your desired price. Order fills only when market reaches that price.
- Pros: Get exact price you want, lower fees usually
- Cons: May never fill if price doesn't reach your target
- Best for: Patient traders, larger trades
Maker = Your limit order adds liquidity (lower fees)
Taker = Market orders remove liquidity (higher fees)
Using limit orders can save you 50% on fees!
Stop-Loss Order
Automatically sell if price drops to a certain level. Limits your losses.
- Set below your entry price
- Protects against big drops
- Important for risk management

- Enter amount of crypto to sell
- You'll receive USDT (or other quote currency)
Always verify:
- Correct trading pair
- Right direction (buy vs sell)
- Amount is correct
- Fees make sense
One wrong click can be costly!
Basic Trading Strategies
DCA (Dollar-Cost Averaging)
Invest a fixed amount at regular intervals, regardless of price.
- Example: Buy $100 of BTC every week
- Reduces impact of volatility
- Best for long-term investors
- No need to time the market
Buy the Dip
Buy when prices drop significantly from recent highs.
- Wait for 10-30% corrections
- Only in uptrends or for long-term holds
- Risk: "dip" might keep dipping
HODL
Buy and hold for the long term, ignoring short-term volatility.
- Simplest strategy
- Historically profitable for BTC, ETH
- Less stress than active trading
- FOMO buying - Don't buy just because price is pumping
- Panic selling - Don't sell just because price is dropping
- Over-trading - Fees add up, most traders lose money
- Use trading - As a beginner, avoid it completely
Most successful long-term investors just buy Bitcoin and Ethereum with DCA, then HODL. No fancy trading needed. Simplicity often beats complexity.

Real Loss Examples from Poor Spot Trading
Loss Example 1: Overtrading
- Trader: David, new to crypto, tried day trading
- Starting capital: $10,000
- Strategy: 5-10 trades daily on Coinbase
- Win rate: 54% (better than coin flip!)
- Duration: 3 months
- Ending balance: $4,200
- Loss: $5,800 (58% of capital)
- Why: Fees (0.6% × 450 trades = $270) + spreads + poor risk management
Loss Example 2: FOMO Buying
- Event: Bitcoin pump from $60k to $67k in May 2026
- Trader: Sarah, bought at $66,800 (near peak)
- Amount: $15,000
- Result: Price corrected to $52k within 2 weeks
- Panic sold: at $53k
- Loss: $3,150 (21%)
- If held: BTC later hit $89k (January 2026) = $5,000 profit
Loss Example 3: Wrong Trading Pair
- Mistake: Trading low-liquidity altcoin pairs
- Pair: OBSCURECOIN/BTC (only $50k daily volume)
- Order: Market buy for $5,000
- Slippage: 8% due to low liquidity
- Immediate loss: $400 just from order execution
- Fee on top: $50
- Total entry cost: $450 (9% of position)
Maker vs Taker Economics
Understanding the fee difference:
| Exchange | Maker Fee | Taker Fee | Savings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Binance | 0.075% | 0.100% | 25% |
| Coinbase Advanced | 0.40% | 0.60% | 33% |
| Kraken Pro | 0.16% | 0.26% | 38% |
Example: $100,000 annual volume on Kraken
- Taker fees: $260/year
- Maker fees: $160/year
- Savings: $100/year just from using limit orders
Common Beginner Mistakes
Top 10 Costly Mistakes
- Using market orders on low-liquidity pairs: 3-8% slippage loss
- Not understanding quote currency: Buying wrong asset (BTC/ETH pair confusion)
- Ignoring fees: 1.5% Coinbase simple vs 0.1% Binance = 15x difference
- Emotional trading: FOMO buying at peaks, panic selling at bottoms
- No stop-loss: Small losses become -70% portfolio wipeouts
- Overtrading: More trades = more fees, worse performance
- Trading during news: Volatility causes 5-15% slippage
- Not tracking cost basis: Tax nightmares, IRS penalties
- Using entire balance: No reserve for better entries
- Chasing pumps: 78% of tokens dump -40% within 7 days of pump
Tax Implications of Spot Trading
Every Trade is a Taxable Event
| Action | Taxable? | Tax Type | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buy BTC with USD | No | - | Just establishes cost basis |

| Trade BTC for ETH | Yes | Capital gains | Crypto-to-crypto is taxable |
| Trade ETH for USDT | Yes | Capital gains | Even stablecoin trades taxed |
Short-Term vs Long-Term Tax Rates (US)
- Hold < 1 year: 10-37% (ordinary income rates)
- Hold > 1 year: 0-20% (long-term capital gains)
- Example on $50k gain:
- Short-term (37% bracket): $18,500 tax
- Long-term (15% bracket): $7,500 tax
- Savings from holding 1 year: $11,000
